Hot Work Fire Watch

The history of the Fire Service in New York began in 1648 during the administration of Governor Peter Stuyvesant, when the first fire ordinance was adopted by the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam. There may be additional requirements that your construction site is required to adhere to. It's your responsibility as the site manager to understand the codes and regulations that govern your site and ensure there are proper plans and personnel in place to prevent potentially deadly situations.

In order to maintain your status as a Certified Fire Guard in New York City, you must renew your certificate each year by submitting your renewal notification or a letter stating the Certificate of Fitness number with a fee of $15, money order or personal check payable to Fire Department City of New Yorkto: FDNY (Cashier's Unit), 9 MetroTech Center, Brooklyn, NY 11201.
A Certificate of Fitness holder must be present to perform fire watch during hot work operations at: 1) construction sites, 2) rooftop operations where torch-applied roof systems are in operation, and 3) In any building or structure, when the torch operation is conducted by a person holding a citywide permit for torch operations.

Fire watch personnel are dispatched to buildings with broken or malfunctioning fire alarm or sprinkler systems where they then have a list of duties that includes keeping a vigilant watch over the building and surrounding areas, acting as human fire detectors.
