Private (voluntary) health insurance: In addition to statutory coverage, most of the population (84%) purchases a mixture of complementary voluntary insurance covering benefits such as dental care, alternative medicine, physiotherapy, eyeglasses and lenses, contraceptives, and the full cost of copayments for medicines (excess costs above the limit for equivalent drugs—an incentive for using generics).

Social inclusion: in 2015, more Dutch people were living below the national poverty line than in 2006 (SDG 1). Although the Netherlands ranks high (4th) on the EU Gender Equality Index, it still faces persistent high levels of gender inequality in various domains (SDG 5). Moreover, several groups in the Netherlands experience perceived discrimination (SDG 10).
The survey Toward Higher-Performance Health Systems revealed that the Dutch public stood out for its positive views. While Dutch residents are automatically insured by the government for Wlz, everyone has to take out their own basic healthcare insurance (basisverzekering), except those under 18 who are automatically covered under their parents' premium.
